A woman’s breasts will undergo many changes throughout her pregnancy and breastfeeding experience. Many of these changes are gradual but some, such as engorgement, can come on quickly and feel a little overwhelming.
At some point in many mum’s breastfeeding experience, her breasts will become full, heavy and firm. This is usually on day three or four when the milk comes in, however, it could also come later, when baby starts to sleep through the night.
Having full and heavy breasts in these circumstances is normal and the breasts will soon return to their normal softer state.
When the engorgement and heaviness increases rather than dissipates, a mum may begin to feel unwell or feverish and may notice a redness or radiating heat in parts of the engorged breast.
This is the body’s way of asking for help and alerting mum to a problem which needs to be addressed and resolved.
There are many stages to mastitis and knowing what the signs are, will help you to recognise and resolve even the earliest sign such as a small blockage in the breast. Knowledge is empowering and practical ‘know how’ enlightening.

How did you learn about letsbreastfeed.com?
My mum found you after a search on sore nipples.
Did you find the information useful?
Yes
Would you recommend it to your friends?
Yes – definitely!
My mother purchased your sore nipples e book when I had that then I purchased this one when I got mastitis. Your information is explained simply and has a few things within it which I hadn’t found before. The main bits of info which I couldn’t have done without were your ‘fail safe latch on’, positioning of a tall baby, and I worked out I was getting mastitis due to baby’s mouth slipping whilst feeding. My baby is ten weeks old now and finally he is almost exclusively breast fed with a short feeding time every 3-4 hours and longer at night. It has been very hard but I would not have done it without your information. This has been the best breast feeding advice I have seen and this is my second baby – if only I’d found you for my first. I am really enjoying feeding my baby now and will tell everyone about Geraldine! The only thing which would have helped more would have been being able to print the notes. That way when you are trying to read the diagrams you can do so whilst trying to latch baby on in a comfortable position.

Dear Geraldine,
Thank you for recommending your Mastitis eBook to me. I was so nervous that I was going to develop an abscess, but now I understand that the redness is only a sign of severe mastitis. Phew! I am feeling much better and I went to the doctor for the antibiotics, but didn’t need to use them. I am really happy that you managed to finish writing your book before I had my baby, because I was worried about the level of help I would get here in Spain.
Thank you so much!

Early recognition and treatment of engorgement and mastitis, often result in a speedy recovery. I wanted to put my knowledge and tips for recognizing and resolving mastitis into a format that most mums could access at any time of the day or night.

The information in the Mastitis eBook is based on my personal experience of helping hundreds of mums overcome breast blockages and inflammation, so I am confident that it will help you.
The great thing is that you probably have everything you need at home to encourage fast recovery and avoid the necessity for antibiotics.
Furthermore, my clients feel empowered when they have found the original cause of their mastitis, as they are able to prevent it reoccurring. One bout of mastitis is more than enough.
