Let's Breastfeed

Low milk supply? Demand more.

Breastfeeding allows your baby to take as much as he needs at each feed, some feeds he will be hungrier and at other feeds he will hardly suckle. This freedom a breastfed baby enjoys can lead to mums questioning their supply. Has he stopped feeding after 5 minutes because there isn’t anything there? When should I feed him again? Why is he feeding so frequently?

Milk supply is produced according to its demand, however, the amount your baby will need or demand, can change which then impacts your supply.

It is very rare that mums are not able to produce enough milk to satisfy their baby and when milk supply is low, boosting it is relatively quick, provided you create a greater demand.

Is your milk supply really low or do you perceive it to be low?

There are certain conditions that can lead to low production, but with some practical know how, production problems are usually overcome.

More often, mums perceive their milk supply to be low, when it is actually sufficient and their baby is simply going through a growth spurt.

I have dedicated a large section of this book to understanding how your anatomy may impact on milk supply and transfer as there are two people involved in breastfeeding. We need to consider both mum and baby, when looking to resolve breastfeeding challenges.

Hi Geraldine,
My milk has already increased with the new position you showed me, so will stick to one cup of tea for now. Feel so much happier already. Speak tomorrow.

Hi Geraldine,

The compression is helping loads and Celia stays awake and feeds for roughly 20 minutes, then won’t take more. Is this okay?
Such a relief, thank you!

Hi Geraldine,

Help! I think I have too much milk now and struggle to get Sam on as it just drips everywhere. I was over zealous with the tea.

The skinny on the most common frustrating issues.

Whether you find that your baby wants to feed for hours on end or leaves you feeling full after feeds without gaining weight, I am positive I can help you uncover the cause of your problem.

As I mentioned before, milk production is made on demand. If you feel your supply is low, I will help you explore whether you truly have a production issue or whether it may be more of an transference issue (baby can’t access the milk you have produced)
