Hello ladies,
Yes I am still around, I have been a bit hectic the last few days.
Instead of answering another question today, I really feel that I need to educate with regards to mastitis and getting it treated properly from onset.
Why? Well if it is not treated properly, and I have seen this far too many times in the last 2 weeks, it turns into an abscess and then you are really in trouble!
The first thing you need to do when the breast becomes lumpy is to check that your positioning and attachment is correct – only look at my diagrams and take my advice on this to be sure that you have got everything right. Use heat just before or during the feed to help the breast drain.
If the breast continues to become more inflammed and tender, you need to reduce swelling immediately. Homeopathic remedies or cold packs in between feeds will do the job.
If you develop a fever, get to your GP and don’t leave until you have antibiotics – preferably flucloxacilin.
Continue with hot and cold packs, complete the course of anitbiotics. If your positioning and attachment is correct, everything will be resolved. If your positioning and attachment is not correct, no amount of antibiotics or anti inflammatories will help.
Get help. Get my mastitis guide and look at the mastitis map. It will clearly tell you what the cause of your mastitis is, depending on the location of the mastitis on the breast.
Come and see me for practical help.
Please don’t just ignore it, if you do, you are only letting yourself down.
When mastitis is not treated properly, you develop an abscess. If you develop an abscess, there is a good chance that it can be drained with a needle, but for a number of clients recently, it has ended up being surgery leaving you with an open pussing wound on the breast – doesn’t sound great does it?
Did you see poor Kate from GMTV developed an abscess and had to have emergency surgery? Bless her, she is still feeding after everything but I really can’t see that it would be that simple. The emotional scars stay with you for a while and most woment give up feeding. I don’t know who was advising and looking after her but it could have been avoided!
I know this blog is a little strong but I just feel so bad for mums when I see that they have not been looked after and they land up in these really bad places. It breaks my heart and it is so crazy because it should never happen and yet professionals treat it as though it is part of the course or not a big deal!!!
I can help you, I have helped thousands of mums. You just need to follow my advice.
Touch base with me if there is anything I can help with.
Much love,
Geraldine
