Let's Breastfeed

My baby is very unsettled and cries a lot

Dear Geraldine,

I recently found your website as you had visited a friend in Chiswick and she said you worked wonders with her baby.

I live in Manchester so can’t come and see you, but hope you can help me with my baby. Sophie is 6 weeks old now and my main problem is that she wants to be carried around all the time. She is sleeping better at night but still wakes up at least 3 times even though she doesn’t want a feed.

I am not sure what to do or where to start, please help.

Hi Kate,

From your email, it seems as though your baby is very uncomfortable which will account for the ‘clingyness’ during the day and her unsettled behaviour at night. Wind is such a nasty thing to have to deal with when babies are so little, and this is made worse by the fact that they are not strong enough to move themselves around and get it out, but totally reliant on you.

Babies accumulate wind during the day and if this is not expelled, it becomes quite a problem in the early evening and into the night. Your baby will be tired and in need of sleep, but will be unable to stay asleep, due to the constant cramping she is experiencing.

Get yourself onto a winding aid as we discussed, try the winding techniques that I talked you through at every feed.

Also ensure that you are allowing her time to sleep, even if it means that you are carrying her around in a sling for a few days, until the winding and winding aid start to take effect.

You should quickly see that you work pays off.

Kind regards,

Geraldine
