Man It’s HOT!!

1st July 2009

Right ladies, we need to take action and fast!

The heat is causing too many little ones feeding problems and we need to make sure that this doesn’t result in a whole collection of problems. So, let me show you how to keep your little one awake and feeding for today – the hottest day of the year so far!

Feeding tips

  • Rinse some wipes with water to remove the soapy chemicals and then pop into an air tight container and into the fridge. Use these to wipe baby’s face hands and feed before feeding to refresh and wake him or her up. Keep your wipe to hand when you are feeding. ( you will see that the wipe will warm up really quickly when you take it out of the fridge – we don’t want to shock baby with an ice cold wipe – so make sure the wipe is cool but pleasant beforehand.)
  • Undress baby to his or her vest or nappy. We need to keep baby cool and we also want exposed skin so that we can wipe this with the wet wipe you have beside you. You will need to undress baby to match the degree of sleepiness. When baby is sleepy, compress to push the milk into his or her mouth. This shoud get the swallowin going again. If not, wipe baby’s body or legs with the cool wipe beside you and then blow on the damp area. This will cool baby down and should keep him or her feeding.
  • Create a home made air conditioner with a fan and a bowl of ice. Get a big bag of ice and pop this into a bowl. Place infront of the fan and tilt the fan downwards so that it will blow onto the ice. (You can put some lavender oil into the bowl if you like) Turn the fan on and then sit and feet infront of it. The cool air will keep you both comfortable. This is one of Lolly’s top tips!

Sleeping Tips

  • Keep your windows open and your curtains closed. The more sunshine that enters the house, the harder it will be to keep cool. (the sund heats surface areas in the house which results in more internal heat. Keep everything closed.
  • Open curtains around 9pm when the sun is down. Keep the curtains open as this will let in more fresh air. (You may want to close them around 4am so that baby doesn’t think it is play time.)Keep internal house doors open to encourage circulation. If you are a bigger family, place a fan in the hallway from which the rooms lead off and let it blow into the rooms throughout the night.
  • Find your hot water bottle which is probably packed away in the back of the cubboard and fill this with water. Pop this into the freezer and use in baby’s cot before or during nap times. You can get different sizes which will fit snuggly at the foot of baby’s bed. If using to prepare baby’s bed before a sleep, place where baby will be lying to cool this area down. When baby is asleep, place at the foot of the cot to keep those little toots cool. You can do the same for yourself if you like.

I hope this helps you get through the day. Call me if you need any help.

Much love as always,

Geraldine
