Let's Breastfeed

Help! Baby won’t take a bottle!

It is so fantastic when breastfeeding is going well, that moms often forget to introduce a bottle – whilst baby is still open to the suggestion.

Things are very different if you have missed this opportunity and are faced with a 5 month old who point blank refuses to accommodate anything other than his mothers breast!

There is a lot of scare mongering about how if your baby has one suck from a bottle – your breastfeeding is doomed to failure! Well, I simply don’t agree with this as I have had no breast refusal problems with any of my clients after the introduction of a bottle.

So if breastfeeding is going well, you have a good milk supply and baby is thriving and between 3-6 weeks, you could introduce a bottle once a day – using expressed breast milk. (have a look at the Expressing program for instructions)

If your baby is not able to breastfeed well, is not gaining weight well and you are experiencing pain, it would be a good idea to get your breastfeeding problems resolved before introducing a bottle.

For the moms with older babies who are struggling, keep trying, be patient and get some professional help if you can. I will release a program full of practical instruction on this topic in the future.

For moms with younger babies, I find the Dr Browns or Born Free bottles the least disruptive and would only ever recommend one of these for the first 6 weeks of baby’s life.

Wishing you all success and happy feeding!

Geraldine
