Have you taken Cabergaline to inhibit lactation soon after delivery or have you used it to slowly decrease your supply when you made the decision to stop breastfeeding?
The reason I ask is that I think this is going to become quite a hot topic over the next couple of weeks, especially with the run up to Breastfeeding Awareness week in May.
I assume we will have a good debate as to whether moms should or shouldn’t breastfeed, how long they should feed exclusively and where they should feed!
Things will become more interesting as some women stand up and say they took Cabergoline purely for social and vanity reasons.
The Sunday Times had an article about this topic this morning, page 11, where a mom who was struggling with breastfeeding, used the drug to reduce her supply.
She should have called me! I would have sorted her out and she could have ‘Given up on a GOOD DAY!’
Whilst it is her choice, I just wonder how her decision will affect her breastfeeding outcome if she has another little baby. Will she even try to breastfeed or will the scars of the first attempt prevent her from even taking the first step. I do find it sad, both for her and her baby.
She clearly wanted to breastfeed, or she wouldn’t have suffered some horrible pain trying to get it right. The thing is though, had she found the right support, advice, she would have been able to enjoy pain free feeds and loving bond shared with her baby.
Did nobody tell her about www.letsbreastfeed.com???
CLEARLY NOT!
You see, it is not HOW you dry up your milk supply that worries me, it is WHY you dry up your milk production.
Please don’t think that giving up breastfeeding is an easy option, it is a tough decision to make and if you make it in a hurry on a bad day, you may just regret it and its consequences for a long long time.
Much love, as always.
