Okay, so I will not know whether your baby has reflux or not unless I see him or her, but as with everything, there are a few signs that tell us the reason behind your baby’s unsettled behaviour is reflux.
I also thought it would be good to address this briefly this morning, as trapped wind is often mistaken for reflux and babies are given all sorts of things unnecessarily that create other problems.
What are the signs to look for:
- Baby is fussy at the breast after feeding for a few minutes.
- Baby is arching back quite a lot.
- Baby can’t be out down for hours after the feed even though he or she has had a good feed and is gaining weight well.
- Baby is bringing up milk and seems a lot worse after the milk has come up.
- Baby is bringing up so much milk that he or she is not gaining weight properly.
- Baby is feeding all the time and gaining too much weight.
You can surely see that there are some symptoms that are very similar to trapped wind, making it very easy to misdiagnose.
So before you go to your doctor for reflux treatment, give me a call so that I can properly assess your feeding, milk flow, show you how to wind properly and do some reflux tests.
The first line of treatment for reflux babies is infant gaviscon. The down side about using this is that it really constipates babies and creates hours of straining and crying in addition to what you and your baby are already going through.
You have got my number.
Much love,
Geraldine
