Can I prevent my baby becoming too jaundiced?

Dear Geraldine,

I am due to have my first baby in the next couple of weeks and am worried about him/her becoming very janudiced and needing to go back into hospital. How can I stop my baby from becoming jaundiced?

Jane

Hi Jane,

Whilst jaundice is part and parcel of being a baby, the degree to which your baby becomes jaundiced is something that you can manage. Colostrum produced in the early days is an amazing laxative which will help your baby pass meconium well. The more nappies your baby fills, the less jaundiced your baby will be.

Get your positioning and attachment right from the start so that your baby can transfer milk well.

I would suggest that you get yourself a copy of the Let’s Breastfeed Program where you will find -in detail- how to know whether your baby is getting enough colosturm in the early days by looking for ‘good signs’ and what to do if your baby is not. Each eBook comes with the brilliant Positioning and Attachment Made Easy bonus and I would be surprised if you had problems feeding having read it.

Get in touch if you need to.

Kind regards,

Geraldine
