Whilst some babies are really laid back and enjoy feeding hours, often the speed of the feed has more to do with you than it does your baby.
You see, your milk is produced in little sacs located near the outer edge of the breast. Around each little sac you will find a band of muscles. When your baby latches onto the breast, these muscles contract and squeze the milk out. This happens simultaneously in all the little saces and in both breasts – which is why you will be leaking from the side you are not feeding on.
Anyway – the faster and harder these muscles contract – the faster your milk will flow. So, you are ultimately responsibel for the speed at which your baby feeds.
It is important to make sure your baby is positioned and attached properly, as this will enable your baby to transfer milk more readily. Have a look at the previous blog for more tips on positioning and attachment.
See you soon,
Geraldine
