Let's Breastfeed

Breast, bottle and breast again

Hi

Thanks for this advice – it is very helpful. However I have a slightly different problem. I have been breastfeeding for months and have recently been using at the 3pm feed to start weaning off breastfeeding. My daughter reluctantly took a few onces at a push but i would not offer my breast as i was determined to wean off. Therefore my milk has dried up at this time and now suddenly my baby goes absolutely mad when the bottle comes near her and completely refuses to take any formula or expressed milk! I dont know what to do as i no longer have enough breastmilk to give her at this time. Please help!

Thank you

Lara and Sienna

Hi Lara,

The road to success is never an easy one. I am not sure what has led Sienna to revolt against bottle feeding, but we need to be carefel that she doesn’t get herself into a pickle and mess up the rest of her day (and night) time routines.

I would suggest that you get her back onto the breast at the 3pm feed for at least 3-5 days to reassure her that everything is okay. When trying something out, we give with one hand and try with another, so continue to offer the bottle at 3pm, but also offer the bottle at another feed or 2, so that she starts to see it as part of her feeding routine, rather than something nasty that happens once a day.

Only offer expressed breast milk as babies are sensitive to things that irritate their gut and will point blank refuse to partake. Offering expressed milk will rule out the chance that she is intolerant to formula and the cause of her rebellion.

Let me know how you get on. I think it would be worth meeting up to go through a step by step plan to get her onto the bottle without further trauma.

Much love,

Geraldine
