Greetings,
As many of you would have noticed, I have not been adding your questions to my blog for a couple of weeks. The reason is that I have been across the pond with my family. Florida was hot and sticky but really wonderful. There were quite a few things going on, which got my attention.
A couple of days after we landed, a breastfeeding mom had a towel thrown over her and her baby, as the staff found breastfeeding difficult to handle. A few days later, she and all her friends returned to the same establishment and sat breastfeeding all morning. This caused a huge stir and the media went wild. It also created many discussions and one particular radio presenter addmitted to being a juvenile and couldn’t help himself staring and ladies ‘boobies’ and didn’t want his wife one day to be oggled by like minded men. Thought it was quite sweet but realise that women struggle with the same issues all over the world.
I have to admit that I am on constant feeding alert and saw many moms nursing their babies which was very encouraging.
It was fantastic to see cheeky little seal pups shoot out of the water and straight onto an exposed nipple of an unsuspecting seal mum, catching some sun. The interesting thing was that the nipple was exactly the same shape and size, so must use a different technique to access the breast milk – something I will be exploring.
We saw dolphins nursing too.
Dolphins usually nurse for 12-18 months though the second babies often are weaned earlier as moms seem to get bored sooner. As the milk is such a great quatlity, the babies only have to nurse for 2-25 seconds and will usually nudge mum every 30 -40 minutes in the early days. The dolphin trainers change the ratio of oily fish in the dolpins diets whilst they are nursing to help increase their supply. Unfortunately, there are cases of some dolphins not able to produce milk but as this was not a recent event, the trainer couldn’t tell me what the outcome was for poor hungry dolphin.
Anyway, there is so much more I can share, but just wanted to say that things will be getting back to normal this week, so do drop me a line if there is anything I can help with and thank you for all of you who have sent in such fantastic feedback for the website and eBooks. I am thrilled that you are able to solve your breastfeeding problems so quickly with a little help.
Much love,
Geraldine
