I believe that every mum has a right to choose how she would like to feed her baby. I appreciate that the baby’s well-being and needs should be considered carefully too, as he won’t be able to voice his opinion or needs as an adult can. Babies love to be close the their mum, they love to be held, touched, cuddled and it is no secret that breast milk is perfectly designed to meet their needs. Mums who for whatever reason don’t want to breast feed, are still providing mother’s milk and closeness when they express and bottle feed.
Expressing and bottle feeding demands a lot of dedication, planning and structure, often more so than if a mum were breastfeeding. It is with this in mind that I feel mums who express and bottle feed should be supported and encouraged on their express journey.
Some mums really want to do what is best for their baby, but don’t want to breast feed. Expressing and bottle feeding is a compromise, a half way mark and their baby still gets the benefits of breast milk and their needs are met too.
Will the breast milk dwindle or dry up over night, probably not if a mum is careful to express regularly and is able to meet her babies growing needs. Is the composition of expressed milk of a poorer quality than fresh from the breast? I am sure there is research somewhere that will state this and even so, no one can argue that formula would be more beneficial than expressed milk, as it is still perfectly designed to meet babies needs.
Have a read and have your say. Moms who opt for breast milk – not breastfeeding.
